Three Ways To Conduct A Search For A Good Pro Bono Lawyer

Not every lawyer who gets involved in pro bono work is doing it for the right reasons. Some of them are merely looking to clear their own conscience. These are not the types of lawyers to be trusted. The ones to be trusted are the ones who are taking on a pro bono case because it is the right thing to do.

How Can I Tell The Difference?

Anyone can do research by using things like a pro bono attorney directory or a pro bono attorney guide. No matter what kind of
pro bono attorney resources a person uses, it is only going to give a limited view of the truth.

The real truth does not come from paper, but it comes from speaking to the person and getting a feel for who they are and what they care about. Below are three things every client needs to look out for when conducting their interviews for their pro bono attorney.

1) Every client needs to do a concise and thorough background check. Make sure the person has done this before and find out why. The "why" will tell the client their true intentions and how their own case will be handled.

2) Ask other lawyers and colleagues the person knows. Every lawyer has an image to project to the people. Anytime their "projected" image and the image others have of them do not line up, there is going to be an issue.

3) Take a tour of the person's office. Do not trust any lawyer who does not open their door freely. Their office will tell the person everything they need to know.
